Ashford Castle, County Mayo

No 2 Ashford CastleThe grounds of Ashford Castle are among the most delightful in Ireland. With over 350 acres of woodlands, lakeside and river walks you would need unlimited time to discover what the estate has to offer. A strikingly impressive 13th Century stronghold resting upon the River Cong with Lough Corrib in the backdrop. Founded by the De Burgo family in 1228, this is one of Ireland’s finest castles.

The famous film “The Quiet Man” was filmed in Cong village and a tour of the village is recommended. The Squire Danaher’s House from the movie is on the grounds of the castle. Board Corrib Cruises for an enjoyable day sailing across Lough Corrib and stop on the island of St. Patrick to view the ruins of an ancient monastery. There are numerous activities to enjoy such as falconry, clay pigeon shooting, horse riding and many beautiful walks. The dining options at Ashford are wonderful, including the renowned main dining room, George V. There is also Cullen’s Cottage on the grounds for the option of a lighter meal and fresco dining in the summer months.

Lough Rynn Castle, County Leitrim

No 3 Lough Rynn CastleSet in a stunning and secluded location on the shores of Lough Rynn this magnificent castle is now an elegant hotel surrounded by over 300 acres of breath-taking scenery and ancient forests. The castle retains its’ historic splendour with cosy open fires, wood panelling, antique furnishings and decorative wood and glass work. Cabra Castle, County Cavan

No 4 Cabra CastleThis magnificent Castle Hotel has a long and interesting history stretching as far back as 1760. Once known as Cormey Castle back in the days of Oliver Cromwell and James II. Castle Leslie, County Monaghan

No 5 Castle LeslieThe beautiful Castle Leslie is steeped in history and full of character and charm. In a beautiful setting, nestled on over 1,000 acres of green hills of County Monaghan, dotted with ancient woodland and glittering lakes. With old-style hospitality and authentic interiors this Irish Castle Hotel exudes old world grandeur. A truly private retreat free from distractions of the outside world. As early as the 1660s, the Castle has welcomed everyone from politicians to poets, ambassadors to dignitaries. In 2002 the former Beatles and Wings singer Paul McCartney married Heather Mills here. It is still run to this day by the Leslie family. There are many activities available on or around the estate from horse riding, beautiful walks, pike fishing, cycling along the Ulster Canal Cycle Trail which passes through the village of Glaslough, the location of the castle.

Clontarf Castle, Dublin

No 6 Clontarf CastleDating back to 1172, Clontarf Castle was built by the Norman adventurer Hugh de Lacy, though the area is recorded in earlier Irish history for the famous Battle of Clontarf which saw the victory, but the demise of Ireland’s last High King Brian Boru in 1014. This historical castle is tucked away in suburban Dublin, two miles from the City Centre and five miles from Dublin Airport. A relaxing retreat and close to renowned golf courses such as St. Ann’s and Royal Dublin. As the city centre is so accessible you can enjoy Dublin’s busy shops, famous sights and bustling nightlife.

Castle Durrow, County Laois

No 7 Castle DurrowA beautiful and luxurious Hotel adjoining the quaint village of Durrow, County Laois. Built in 1716 by Capt. William Flower (later to become Viscount Ashbrook) as his family home in the Midlands of Ireland, its pre Palladian design and formal gardens were the height of fashion in their day and the grey/blue cut stone contrasts with the breath-taking views of the landscape. Walk in the pleasure gardens, river walks and adjoining woodland to work up your appetite for the wonderful food served. Or for the hill walkers, head for the nearby Slieve Bloom Mountains.

Barberstown Castle, County Kildare

No 8 Barberstown CastleA structure originally built in 1288 in Straffan in County Kildare, it was one of the first great Irish country houses to display its splendour to the outside world when it opened as an hotel in 1971. Renovations in 1996 revealed a previously undiscovered tunnel that links the castle to the nearby church in Straffan and is thought to have been used under the Penal Laws. The Castle was built as a fortress to protect the village and people of Barberstown from the attack of the rebellious Vi Faelin, who tried to burn the town (among others) in 1310. It has traditionally found itself in the middle of political struggle and local wars which generally resulted in many changes of ownership. A beautiful hotel with every luxurious bedroom being unique.
