ITINERARY

Ex Ireland: SATURDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER

Pick up from our designated pick up point and travel Rosslare for the sailing to Pembroke. After disembarking, travel across South Wales and the south west of England, with comfort stops en route, to board the overnight cruise ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao. After checking in to comfortable cabins, dinner will be served on board in the ship’s carvery restaurant.

Ex Dublin: SUNDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER

After breakfast on board disembark, then travel southwards through some of the most picturesque parts of northern Spain and check in to your hotel in Madrid. You will spend the next two days exploring at your leisure.

Ex Madrid: MONDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER

We will meet you by luxury coach at Madrid Airport and transfer you to the Madrid Santos Praga Hotel for a two night stay. The remainder of today will be at leisure. Dinner is included in the hotel this evening.

TUESDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER

After breakfast we will meet a local guide for a half day city sightseeing tour. You will see all the main sights including the Gran Via and Cibeles Fountain, the Cervantes Monument in Plaza de Espana and the Plaza Mayor. A visit to the Royal Palace is included. This afternoon and evening will be at leisure for independent sightseeing – perhaps visit the world famous Prado Museum or take a stroll in lovely Retiro Park? There are many restaurants to choose from in the vicinity of the hotel.

WEDNESDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER

We will check out of the hotel and drive to Toledo, the former capital of Spain. There will be time here to walk through the maze of cobbled streets and perhaps visit the Cathedral with its paintings by El Greco. We will then continue, past the walls of Avila, to the university city of Salamanca, noted for its golden stone buildings. We will check in to the Salamanca Forum Resort and dinner is included this evening.

THURSDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER

Today we will cross the Portuguese border and head for Oporto, Portugal’s second largest city after Lisbon. Located on the estuary of the River Douro, Oporto has one of the oldest centres in Europe, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Oporto is of course famous for its port wine and we will visit a Port Wine Cellar and enjoy a taste. There will be free time to admire the multi-coloured houses and churches covered with glazed tiles. Our hotel tonight is the AC Porto Hotel and dinner is included in the hotel.

FRIDAY 18TH SEPTEMBER

After breakfast we will drive south to Fatima to visit the great Basilica, one of the largest Marian shrines in the world. In 1917 the Virgin Mary is reputed to have appeared before three shepherd children on the thirteenth day of six consecutive months and Fatima is now one of Europe’s greatest pilgrimage centres. After our visit we will continue to Lisbon, Portugal’s fine capital city, and check in to the Sana Malhoa Hotel for a two night stay. Dinner is included in the hotel this evening.

SATURDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER

After breakfast we will set off for an excursion to Cascais and Estorial then in the afternoon we will meet a local guide for a 3 hour sightseeing tour of Lisbon. We will see Sao Jorge Castle, the Discovery Monument and the Belem Tower before an included visit to Jeronimo’s Monastery with its amazing ornate cloister. The evening will be at leisure for your own exploration. Perhaps venture into the lively Bairro Alto district this evening for a chance to hear some hauntingly beautiful ‘fado’ music.

SUNDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER

Today we will leave Lisbon and cross the bridge over the River Tagus then head south to the Algarve, Portugal’s sunny south coast. Our destination is the Faro where we will check into the Faro Eva Hotel for an overnight stay with dinner included.

MONDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER

After a leisurely breakfast we will check out of the hotel and drive towards the Spanish border with a stop en route at the fishing port of Tavira. The area around the Old Town Market has plenty of cafes and restaurants for a spot of lunch. We will then drive directly into Andalusia to the wonderful city of Seville and the Hotel Sevilla Catalonia Giralda for a two night stay. You will be enchanted by Seville’s architecture and atmosphere. Dinner is included in the hotel this evening.

TUESDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER

This morning we will meet a local guide for a city sightseeing tour of Seville. We will see the vast Cathedral, burial place of Christopher Columbus, the Giralda Tower and the Santa Cruz Quarter with its flower-decked wrought-iron balconies. The afternoon is at leisure. Maybe visit the Alcazar with its lovely gardens and Moorish architectural features, the Plaza de Espana in the Maria Luisa Park or perhaps enjoy a boat ride along the Guadalquivir River to see the city’s famous bridges? This evening we will enjoy a Flamenco Show (admission and one drink included).

WEDNESDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER

We will check out of our hotel and travel to the famous city of Cordoba. Founded in Roman times, the city still has Roman remains but its most renowned attraction is the Great Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, known as the Mezquita. Originally constructed as a mosque in the 8th century, a cathedral was added inside the mosque by Christian conquerors in the 13th century. The Mezquita is most notable for its giant arches and its forest of over 856 columns of jasper, onyx, marble, and granite. These were taken from the Roman temple which had previously occupied the site and other destroyed Roman buildings. After our visit to the Mezquita we will continue to Granada and check in to the Granada Alixares Hotel. Dinner is included in the hotel this evening.

THURSDAY 24TH SEPTEMBER

The city of Granada is dominated by the Alhambra, a Moorish citadel and palace which is now one of the most visited tourist attractions in Spain and was nominated as one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World”. We will visit the Alhambra and the Generalife Gardens for a guided tour then the remainder of the day is at leisure.

FRIDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER

The final leg of our journey will take us north and across the plain of La Mancha where Don Quixote famously tilted at windmills. We will return to the Hotel Santos Praga in Madrid for our last night.

SATURDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER

We will transfer you to Madrid Airport for your return flight or for those of you travelling from Ireland we will retrace our journey back through northern Spain to the port of Bilbao where we will board the cruise ferry back to Portsmouth and onwards to Pembroke.

SUNDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER

On arrival in Rosslare we will disembark and transfer you to your original pick up point.
